About this tool

Redact PDF lets you draw boxes over text, signatures, photos or any other content and then removes it for good. A black rectangle on top is not redaction: the text underneath can still be copied. Here, each page with a box is redrawn as an image with the box burned in, so the original data is deleted from the file.

Choose the box colour and the image resolution (150 dpi is sharp for reading and printing; go higher for small print). Pages without boxes keep their real, selectable text unless you choose to rasterize every page. Comments and form fields that touch a box are deleted too, including their stored values.

If you only need a quick visual mask for a draft, switch to Visual only — the report will warn you that the content is still in the file. Bookmarks and document properties are not changed, so check them or run Remove Metadata if they contain the same information.

Frequently asked questions

Why is this safer than drawing a black box?

A drawn box only covers the content. Redact PDF rebuilds the page from an image with the box painted in, so the covered text and images are no longer in the file at all.

Will my whole document become an image?

No. Only pages with boxes are converted, unless you turn on Rasterize every page.

Can I undo a redaction?

Not in the output file — that is the point. Keep your original if you might need it.
