About this tool

Dead Link Checker reads every link annotation and bookmark in a PDF and sorts them into web links, email links, jumps inside the document and links to other files. Internal links are checked straight away: a link pointing to a deleted page or a named destination that doesn't exist is flagged as broken.

Web links can be tested too, but only if you switch on “Check web links online”. Your browser then sends a lightweight request to each address — only the URL is sent, never your document. Because browsers hide the server's answer from other sites, the check tells you whether a site responds at all, not whether a specific page returns an error.

The full list downloads as a CSV file with page numbers, so you can fix links in the source document.

Frequently asked questions

Does the online check upload my PDF?

No. Only the link addresses are requested, and only when you turn the option on.

Why is a working link shown as unreachable?

Some sites block automated requests or are slow to answer. Treat “unreachable” as a hint and open the link to confirm.

Which internal links count as broken?

Links to pages that no longer exist and named destinations that are missing from the document.
