PDF to JSON
Extract text with positions, fonts, metadata, bookmarks and annotations into structured JSON.
About this tool
PDF to JSON turns a PDF into machine-readable data for developers, data pipelines and AI workflows. For every page you get the size, rotation and plain text, plus each text run with its x/y position, width, height, font name and font size — or whole lines if you prefer.
The export also includes document metadata (title, author, producer, dates), the bookmark outline with target page numbers, and annotations such as comments, links and form-field values.
Coordinates are in PDF points with the origin at the bottom-left of the page, exactly as the PDF stores them. Extraction runs locally — handy for sensitive documents you can't send to a cloud API.

Frequently asked questions
Why is there no text in the JSON?
Scanned PDFs contain pictures, not text. Run OCR PDF first, then export again.
What units are the coordinates in?
PDF points (1/72 inch) with y measured from the bottom of the page.
Items or lines?
Items are the raw text runs from the PDF; lines groups them into reading lines, which is easier for most uses.
