Add Page Labels
Set page label styles such as i, ii, iii for front matter and 1, 2, 3 for the body.
About this tool
Add Page Labels changes the page numbers PDF readers display in their page box and thumbnails — without changing what's printed on the pages. Number the front matter i, ii, iii, start the main text at 1, and label an appendix A-1, A-2.
Write one rule per line: the first page of the range, the style, an optional start number and an optional prefix. For example “1: r” labels from page 1 in lower-case Roman numerals, “5: D” starts Arabic numbers at page 5, and “20: D: 1: A-” gives A-1, A-2 from page 20.
Styles: D = 1, 2, 3 · r = i, ii, iii · R = I, II, III · a = a, b, c · A = A, B, C · none = prefix only. Labels are stored in the PDF itself, so they work in Acrobat, Foxit, browsers and most readers.

Frequently asked questions
Does this print numbers on the pages?
No. Page labels are only what the reader shows. To print numbers on the pages, use Page Numbers.
What happens to pages before my first rule?
If your first rule doesn't start on page 1, pages before it get normal numbers 1, 2, 3.
Can I start at a number other than 1?
Yes — add a start number, e.g. “5: D: 10” labels page 5 as 10.
